Jan Ford, NNI Volunteer of the Month for August, 2008

Janice Murphy Ford (better known as Jan) was born and raised on the Murphy family farm southeast of DeKalb, Missouri, where she attended DeKalb grade and high schools. She attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville and Kansas State University. Jan has 2 grown children and is very proud of grandchildren Connor and Camryn McDonald.

Jan’s diverse work history includes babysitting, banking, the Gower Convalescent Center and Trans World Airlines, retiring in 1997. She was also a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant for 20 years and taught cooking classes in 4-H Club for 15 years

At Gower Christian Church Jan serves as Sunday School teacher, chairs numerous departments, works with Christian Women's Fellowship, and assists with Meals on Wheels. She currently attends Fairview Christian Church in Gladstone. Jan is a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority in Kansas City, volunteers at NNI, serves as a Friendly Visitor with Shepherd Center of the Northland, and is an active member of the North Kansas City Hospital Auxiliary.

Her hobbies include reading, water aerobics, walking, volunteering, music, spending time with her grandchildren, visiting the elderly, lunches with friends, movies, trips and just enjoying life. How she finds time to enjoy life is an open question, but one can surmise that she finds much enjoyment in serving others.

Jan has been a bright light for Northland Neighborhoods by volunteering monthly with newsletter mailings, special mailings, attending monthly senior workshops, always with a smile on her face. NNI appreciates her time and her smile.
