"Stinkin' Thinkin"
Mood changes as we age -- Who are YOU listening to?"
Most of us assume that our mood is largely determined by what happens to us. Research says otherwise -- that it's our negative beliefs that "color" the way we act and react towards ourselves and the world.
Sally King, LCSW, Older Adult Care Coordinator at Tri-County Mental Health Services will share some of the secrets of depression prevention for seniors -- and all will come away with a better understanding of the role Stinkin' Thinkin' plays in our mood and outlook on life!
Wednesday, June 10th - 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Talk Early and Talk Often
We all know that all conversations are not the same. Some are easy and flow easily (Can you believe the Royals won/lost again?). Some are just plain tough; tough to start, tough to continue and sometimes even tough to end.
Among some of the "tough" one are those topics around aging parents as they consider health issues, housing needs and the care they begin to require. It is so easy for parents and children to delay initiating these conversations and even easier to agree with them when they say, "We don't need to talk about that yet!"
When we delay we end up entangled in confusing and intense conversations in hospital hallways after there has been a broken hip, a stroke or some kind of unexpected diagnosis. The time for considered and reflective conversation has been lost and decisions are reactive and driven by circumstance.
What's the alternative? Talk Early and Talk Often! The Executive Director of the Alliance on Aging, Sandy Silva, will share information and antidotes that will shed light on the dynamics of these "tough" discussion and encourage family members to talk Early and Often!

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
It is almost 8 in the morning. You are at the kitchen table, drinking coffee and reading the paper. You go to see what the problem is and find him lying motionless. At this point you rush to his side and note that he is unconscious and does not appear to be breathing. What would you do?
Most readers would quickly call 911. But would you, and could you, provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR? Knowledge is power. So, if you or your loved ones are concerned about having a heart attack, beat the odds by learning all that you can about CPR.
