Clay County Senior Service Handyman Grant
PURPOSE: For senior applicants to receive the necessary safety improvements or minor home repairs to remain in their home.
AUTHORIZATION: The Clay County Senior Service Handyman Grant is made possible by Clay County Senior Services through the HB 351 Senior Tax Levy.
ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS: Applicants must be age 60 or older, meet specific income and sliding scale eligibility, have a current home insurance policy, own their home in Clay County, and be current on their taxes. NOTE: This grant is for senior homeowners only, and renters are not eligible.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Individuals may obtain an application from Northland Neighborhoods, Inc. After completing it, NNI staff will set an appointment to visit the home and access the request. If the request is within the parameters of the program, staff will send out Requests For Bid (RFB), and the contractor will set an appointment with the homeowner at a time that is conducive to their schedules. Upon completion of all RFBs, the staff will contact the homeowner to be sure they understand what repairs will be made and what they may owe on the project. After everything has been discussed and agreed upon, a Notice To Proceed (NTP) will be sent to the contractor. If the homeowner has a co-pay, a check must be made to Northland Neighborhoods Inc. prior to the commencement of repairs, and NNI will write one check to the contractor after all work has been completed. At the end of the project, a final inspection occurs and the homeowner indicates the satisfaction level of work by signing a release for NNI to pay the contractor.
FUNDING LIMITS: $1,000 per senior household per year.
PROGRAM EXPLANATION: Grant amount does not include client co-pay. If a job is bid at $500 and the client’s co-pay is 50%, they will pay $250. A remaining balance of $750 will be available to the client should other projects emerge during that calendar year. Client co-pay may include labor and supplies; client may also elect to buy supplies themselves and have funding apply only to their labor costs. Client must re-apply every year.
